Help Your Child Think About Spending - not just tracking it
Help your child start noticing patterns in their spending — what they buy, how much they spend, and how they feel about those choices. This simple reflection helps them become more mindful and confident with money.
Instead of stepping in to correct every decision, you can guide them to think back on their own. That’s what the Spending Tracker is for — a simple tool that helps kids pause and notice their own habits.
It’s not about right or wrong choices. It’s about helping your child understand what feels worth it, what doesn’t, and why — so they can build confidence in how they handle money.
How to Use the Spending Tracker
Keep it simple. Let your child fill it in after they spend — not before.
If they forget a day, don’t worry. You can still chat about one or two things at the end of the week.
Here are some questions you can use to start the conversation:
“What did you spend on this week?”
“How did you feel afterward — happy, disappointed, or okay?”
“Did you enjoy your purchase? Why or why not?”
“What made you choose that?”
“If you could, would you make the same choice again next time?”
“What do you want to do differently next week?”
No need to analyse every purchase. Just talk, listen, and notice together. Over time, your child will start to see patterns — and with that, comes awareness and better decisions.
A Small Habit, A Big Difference
This isn’t a budgeting drill. It’s a way to grow your child’s sense of ownership and confidence. When they get to reflect on their own terms, they learn to trust themselves — and that’s the real goal.
